175 pounds of multicolored candy as a “portrait” of the artist’s partner Ross Laycock, who died of AIDS that same year.

Ross’s ideal healthy body weight was 175 pounds.

Attendees of the exhibit were instructed to take one piece of candy each.The dwindling pile paralleled Ross’s body languishing from the disease.

Gonzalez-Torres also instructed that the pile be continually replenished so that Ross could be symbolically reborn again and again.

So, I paint my nails pretty regularly these days. I also work as a barista/cashier pretty regularly these days. A few weeks back, I had a customer come in, a fairly typical, sheltered, suburban soccer mom, and she ordered a latte from me. She saw my brightly colored nails and said, “Wow, you’re so brave! My son asked me about painting his nails, and if it’s okay for boys to do that. Now I’ll tell him there’s a cool guy who does it too!” It was a nice moment, very cute.

Then, last week, she came in again, and said, “Hey, I’m so glad you’re here! I want you to meet someone!” She then brings her son forward, and says, “Okay sweetie, show him what you did!” And he throws his hands up, showing off his bright, sparkling blue nails. He shows them off, and I show mine off to him. He smiles. We fist bump.

Guys, I’ve only wanted to cry once at work before, and that was when someone ordered a large dry soy cappuccino on ice.

This time, though. This was a good cry.

Body Image Issues =/= Fat Stigma/Prejudice

Ok not-fat people, it’s time to just stop. Yes, we know people of all body shapes and sizes suffer from poor body image issues. But we’re not fucking talking about “body image issues” here.

We are talking about the way society as a whole treats fat people as sub-human and strips our basic right to a peaceful life away from us.

Fat people are not allowed to have a positive body image AT ALL, and this is BECAUSE fat is stigmatised and fat people suffer cultural prejudice.

Having poor body image is not the same as having people blatantly prejudiced against you because of your body.

Having poor body image is something that YOU feel or think about YOURSELF because of the way that bodies are policed in our culture. Fat stigma and prejudice are something that our entire society feels and DOES to fat people because fat people are regarded as lesser beings than not-fat people.

They are not the same thing and you do not get to bring body image in not-fat people up when we are talking about fat prejudice and stigma.

Got it? Now knock that shit off.
